The Immune System is very important to our body’s health. Our immune system is our defense against germs and viruses that are trying to overtake our bodies and make us ill. If we have a weakened immune system, we are more susceptible to developing illnesses and diseases compared to having a strong immune system. Many things can be done to strengthen the immune system within our bodies to help in the war against bodily intruders.
Typically, the average immune system does a pretty good job at keeping illnesses at bay however, if we don’t consciously make an effort to strengthen our immune system, we are putting our body at risk of becoming ill more often and no one enjoys being ill or sick. The immune system is like any other system; it requires a certain amount of balance within the body to make it run efficiently, and this can make it difficult for researchers to know exactly how to boost this machine and keep it in top shape at all times. According to Harvard University, a lot of research has already been done on the immune system and researchers have found ways that may strengthen your immune system, but they are just in the preliminary stages; there is not one specific thing that can be done to make your immune system the best it can be. Despite these findings only being in the preliminary stages, there are some things you can do to help boost your immunity.
Diet
Although, not much research has been done on the effect of diet on the immune system, it has been proven that those who live in poverty and do not eat balanced diets become sick more often. The little research that has been done, shows that if you consume a diet that is deficient in Vitamins A, B6, C, and E, along with folic acid, copper, zinc, and selenium, you may become more susceptible to illness. Vitamin A plays a role in infections, while Vitamin B6 can depress the immune system if your body is not getting enough. All of these vitamins and minerals play an integral role in keeping your body healthy and your immune system strong. Most vegetables are full of these vitamins and minerals and should be consumed on a daily basis. If you feel that your diet does not have enough vitamins or minerals, take a daily multi vitamin and mineral supplement.
Vitamin C is well known to have immunity boosting properties and if your body does not get enough Vitamin C you may become sicker more often. It is advised that your take Vitamin C supplements especially when you are ill to boost your body’s ability to fight off the infection and rid it from your body.
You may also wish to incorporate more raw garlic into your diet as garlic contains properties that are shown to fight infections and viruses. Only raw garlic will give you the added benefits but it can be consumed in a variety of ways.
Sleep
Getting enough sleep every night is very important for a variety of reasons. During sleep, your body restores and repairs tissues and cells that you use throughout the day. When we get enough sleep, our body will produce more infection fighting cells. Adults should get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. A good night’s sleep will not only help you feel better throughout the day but may also keep you from becoming ill in the future.
Exercise
The American Council on Exercise claims that getting more exercise in your daily routine can also work to make your immune system stronger along with improving your overall health. Exercise allows the body to circulate immunity cells while strengthening the immune systems ability to fight off germs. Exercise should be done moderately though as an exercise that is too intense lasting more than 90 minutes can have the opposite effect on your immunity.
Lighten Up
Stress can have a detrimental affect on your health and immunity. When you are stressed out, your adrenaline and cortisol levels increase which results in lowering your immunity levels. When you are under a large amount of stress, your body views the stress as being an intruder, the same as a virus or infection, so your body works to fight off the stress, in return, making itself weaker. This is why many people develop an illness during high levels of stress; your immune system does not have any time to rest and rebuild itself because it is constantly fighting the stress. Find stress reducing methods to use when faced with high levels of stress which could include meditation, deep breathing, exercising, or doing something fun. These are all ways to reduce the stress that is being inflicted on your mind and body.
Other things that play a role in weakening your immune system include smoking cigarettes, being overweight, drinking alcohol regularly, and high blood pressure. Keeping all of these things in check and following the above 5 steps will help to strengthen your immune system and keep you as healthy as possible in the future.
Before picking up supplements or herbal remedies that claim to boost your immunity levels, be sure to check the labels and do your research. Many of these so called immunity boosters have not been proven to strengthen the immune system and many of these may just be a waste of your money. Follow the above guidelines for the best immunity strengthening results.
Researchers are presently working on studying the immune system more intensely along with the effects that certain foods and herbal supplements may or may not have on the immune system. As our body ages, our immune system becomes weaker, this is why older people tend to become ill more often. Respiratory infections and pneumonia are the leading cause of death in the elderly and this is why it is important to strengthen the immune system during the younger years so that it will remain stronger as you age.
